Yes, you should go on a date to the symphony! Here's why.
Date night ideas in Saskatoon are getting pretty wild lately. There’s axe throwing, escape rooms, oh really I should just blog a solid list of great ways to spend time in the city with your partner… but you know what I feel should be at the top of that list? Listening to beautiful music together. My husband and I just enjoyed a night at the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra (featuring Thomas Yu, a glitch Sound of Music experience, and some cheeky Stravinsky) so I’ve got some recent experience to draw on that says an SSO date leads the pack. Hear me out, I’ve got reasons.
It’s fun
Not snobby, not elitist, just fun. Dress up, go casual, everyone is just there to enjoy!
It’s easy
Actively listening to live classical music together means no high-pressure convo on a date with someone you’re just getting to know. Or conversely, if you really know your date (I’ve been married for 14 years, say), it’s nice to just sit and enjoy it.
It’s emotional
Music makes you feel. Soaring strings? I’ll hold hands to that. Glitch Sound of Music? You know I’m catching my date’s glance. Surreal piano talent? You know we stood and clapped in awe together at the end of the concerto. Nothing but nothing moves you like music.
It’s interesting
SSO programming is diverse and dynamic, as evidenced by “Behind the Sound of Music” by Saskatchewan composer Nicole Lizée, a selection which divided opinions. Was it meant to be quirky and funny? Or was it meant to be uncomfortable? The conversation afterward is part of the date, and heck ya you’ll have fodder.
It’s in the heart of the city
I love heading downtown for a show, don’t you? Wandering around Midtown for a bit because we left for dinner right when the babysitter arrived which meant a bit of extra time in the middle… we’re so lucky to have a world-class orchestra a maximum 20-min drive away from anywhere in town. Who has this?!
It’s local
I like going to movies, but do you think any of those actors are spending their pay in Saskatoon? I mean, probably not. The musicians in our SSO are absolute pros who happen to be our citymates. Supporting our arts is vital. And anyway, as I mentioned in my first point, it’s fun.
Thanks to the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra for having Tyler and I the other day. I’m proud to be partnering with the SSO and Ace Burger (my date night dinner choice the other day— did you know they recently made the switch to 100% compostable tray items?) for a giveaway you definitely want to enter so head on over to Instagram or Facebook to enter.
All of the good photos taken by Julie Isaac and provided by the SSO; others taken by me.
